Coach Andrew (AJ) Kulak grew up in Wolcott, Connecticut, where he attended Wolcott High School. Throughout his childhood Coach AJ stayed active with sports playing football, soccer, basketball, and baseball. He continued his activities during high school, becoming captain of both the football and basketball teams his senior year.
Coach AJ was eventually recruited by Pace University’s Setters football team in Pleasantville, New York where he attended as an undergraduate nursing major in 2006. He was a 3 year starter at tight end and was named captain for both his junior and senior year. In 2008, AJ led the Setters in receptions and was second in receiving yards and touchdowns. At season’s end he was named to All Northeast -10 Conference Second Team. In 2009, his senior season, he led the team in receptions and receiving yards and was second on the team in receiving touchdowns. He was named to All Northeast -10 Conference First Team and to Gazette All- Super Region One Team.
After graduating with his BSN, coach AJ obtained a job at Yale New Haven Hospital as a registered nurse. Looking to fill the void left from ending his football career, coach AJ found CrossFit. “It gave me the communal and team aspect that I was missing yet allowed me to compete and work as an individual,” says coach AJ regarding his entrance into the box.
AJ received his level 1 coaching certification in January 2013. His favorite thing about being a coach is having the ability to help fellow athletes to meet their goals and become better versions of themselves. In the future, coach AJ plans on receiving both his Olympic lifting and football coaching certifications.
